The ABC's of Me

I've been tagged by my long-time friend Samantha. In the past I have conveniently ignored tags from other people because I had to come up with random things about myself and that just seemed like way too much effort. But since this is a simple alphabetical list, I feel that I can now play along. And since I'm a photographer, it's hard for me to do a post without pictures, so I'll throw in a few. Look at Letter T to see who I've tagged.

A- Attached or Single: Attached, happily.

B- Best Friend: Dan, of course, but also Lori, Cami, and my sister Becky. According to Dr. Laura, women shouldn't expect their husbands to act like women, so when I need to just vent or get some sympathy without any attempt to solve the problem, I call one of my "womenfolk."

C- Cake or Pie: Cake, chocolate with cream cheese frosting. Actually, Texas Brownies are my favorite (will happily share recipe for all who are interested.)

D- Day of Choice: Saturday, but not during wedding season, 'cause I always have to work.

E- Essential Item: Aquaphor ointment for my dry Utah lips.

F- Favorite Color: Lily asks me this all the time. I always think to myself, "I dunno, do adults have favorite colors?" I usually just say brown or green.

G- Gummi Bears or Worms: Neither, gummi coke bottles are the best.

Ok, all you Heidelbergers, remember the Gummi Basement? Oh, baby, that was pure paradise! But really, why in the world did we think it was safe to go into some stranger's basement to buy candy?

Sam Carlson, Lori Gerlach, and (I think) Jared Spataro at Youth Conference in Berchtesgaden, Germany, June 1990. Didn't he have the hots for you Sam? Or was it the other way around? Oh well, Travis came out the winner in the end anyway!

H- Hometown: Oh sure, pick on the Army Brat...

I- Indulgence(s): 3 hour naps, Symphony milk chocolate bar, Mini Charleston Chews, chocolate chip cookie dough (why bother baking it?), Superman and Daquiri Ice ice cream.

J- January or July: Definitely July. Lily always asks me what my favorite holiday is (she's on a favorites kick right now) and I always answer 4th of July. Growing up I loved being on base on the 4th of July. It was always so patriotic. It's harder to get that same effect these days unless you can afford to take the whole fam damily to the Stadium of Fire, but I still love being with family and eating lots of good food, especially Texas Brownies, a 4th of July staple.

K- Kids: Two- Drama Queen and Boss Hog. There should be little doubt who is who.

L- Life is incomplete without: Pictures. One of my biggest fears is having a house fire. I keep intending to put backup discs of all our photos in our storage unit, but it hasn't happened yet.

M- Marriage Date: March 23, 1996

N- Number of Siblings: Three- David, Don, and Becky

Spring 1977, campground in the Rhine River region of Germany

November 1978, Germany

May 1980, Possum Kingdom Lake in Texas

January 1985, David leaving for his mission from Washington D.C.

August 1990, Sheridan, Wyoming after Grandad's funeral

December 2004, Washington D.C. Temple when David, June, and Aimee were sealed following the finalization of her adoption.

O- Oranges or Apples: Apples because they're easier to prepare (love the Pampered Chef slicer) but I love a good juicy orange if I'm not the one who has to peel it.

P- Phobias or Fears: Loose hairs. I hate it when there's a loose head hair on my arm or my back, tickling me. Equally gross is when someone leaves hair on the bar of soap (Dan does this all the time when he buzzes his hair.)

Q- Quote(s): My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard. Mother would come out and say, "You're tearing up the grass." "We're not raising grass," Dad would reply. "We're raising boys." ~Harmon Killebrew I try to remember this while forcing myself to ignore the fort in the living room where Lily has been sleeping for 5 nights in a row.

If your sister is in a tearing hurry to go out and cannot catch your eye, she's wearing your best sweater. ~Pam Brown This always makes me think of when we lived in Herborn, Germany and I used to always steal my sister's shirts. I was just so uncool and didn't have much in the way of stylish clothing. See?

December 1986, sixth grade. This was really my coolest outfit and I wore it at least twice a week. Oh, the shame...

R- Reason to Smile: My house is mostly clean.

S- Season: A tie between late Spring and Summer. Love the green, love summer activities, love the long days.

T- Tag Six: Becky Allred, Katy Larsen, Chris Donnell, Jenn Pilch, Cami Nelson, and Hilary Davis (oops, that's not your name anymore!) You don't have to do pictures, so just play along!

U- Unknown Fact About Me: When I was little I used to kiss Ricky Schroder through the television whenever Silver Spoons came on.

V- Vegetarian or Oppressor of Animals: Where's the Beef? Pork, the Other White Meat. I have a hard time thinking of anything to cook if there's no meat. I want to change that. Anyone know any good (and not too much work) vegetarian recipes?

W- Worst Habit: Blowing air through my teeth to clear out food that has gotten stuck. Or swishing my soda to get rid of the carbonation bubbles before I swallow. Both make Dan roll his eyes or whack me on the arm. Ooh, or along those same lines, picking popcorn out of my teeth during a movie.

X- X-Rays or Ultrasounds: If there's a baby to look at, ultrasounds. Otherwise bones are way more interesting.

Y- Your Favorite Food: Indian and Mexican

Z- Zodiac: Leo, and you know I can't do anything without consulting my horoscope. I only married Dan because he was a Libra.

You guys didn't know I was a child model, did you? Hmm, maybe I should have put that under letter U.

Sue, you crack me up. I thought that Samantha and Lori were becoming Hindus. Then when I looked closer I realized that they had coke gummies on their foreheads.

The Alphabet info plus bonus photos was enlightening.

You are such a clever writer. You get an A++++++for "Fantasy Family". I needed a gooooood laugh and you provided it.

That Jared Spataro was a good kid, wasn't he?

Did I know you had older brothers?!? I can see they are somewhat older than you but were they in Heidelberg when we lived there?

I TOTALLY remember the gummi basement! I think the sour stringy things were my favorite, though... I wonder how much money they made off of the overly-trusting Americaners...

My brothers were on missions and in college when we lived in Herborn and Heidelberg, Germany, so it was just Becky and me.

Oh, and Lori, I would tag you if you'd ever GET A BLOG!!!

Hilary- I was thinking about those long sour ropes, remembering how Lori, Kelly, and I used to swallow them down our throats and pull them back out.

Mmm...yummy.

Almost choked on my laugh, Sue!!!

I'm totally loving the fact that blogs are reuniting our seriously out of touch Hberg church group! I am NOT seriously loving the fact that you people keep pulling up pictures of me with the world's largest hair! :)

And to clear the air here - no, I did not have the hots for J. Spataro . . . but he was a total stud of a kid and I remember seeing him at BYU a few times. We cried through the testimony meeting at that Youth Conference together. Awesome times Sue!

ps. Was in Hberg last in September of 2006 - the Gummi Basement no longer exists . . . Matt and I tried to go buy the sour pickles. :(

Done. :)

I love the fact that blogs have a way of reuniting people no matter how many years or how many miles separate them! Thanks for sharing the ABC's of you...so fun to hear the memories and laugh at you and your stylish clothes! :) Wow seeing that picture of you and Dan when you got married brings back memories...look how young you both look! :)

I remember I used to look for spare change in any place possible just to partake of the sugar goodness found inside the Gummi Basement.

When Sam and I discovered that they closed down during our last trip to Heidelberg I felt like I had lost a dear friend.

The great thing was after 15 years of being away I still knew how to get there. Talk about making an impact on a child's life!

Might I say I am so impressed with all your blogging as of lately. I love this tag, and more importantly I love the old pictures of you and the other Garlitz family members. There is a picture of you that looks just like Amelia, and a picture of Becky that looks just like Dani. What is this so called Gummy Basement and how do I find one for myself?

So fortunate to have been on your list - both the tagged and friends list! Stinker! I'll get to it soon so keep checking! Sorry I couldn't find that photo. It would have been much more entertaining than the one that is there. I don't think I have ever seen that one, by the way...

How did I not know about the teeth blowing thing. It sounds obnoxious enough to have noticed during all of those weddings!

Dude, you suck. I was actually having a productive day at home before I read your blog.
Now, I've gotten nothing else done, except for making dinner, in the last six hours, and I made an idiot of myself, revealing intimate things in my blog because of your
DUMB ABC Tag. Oh, well. Here are some comments on your ABC Tag
B - glad to see I made the Best Friends list. You're on mine too.
G - okay, that's got to make the Top Ten List of Ways to Get Abducted or Murdered When You Are A Child - visit the "candy store" in somebody's basement. Yeah, it was really, really stupid, but oh so delicious. How did our parents ever let us go there?
N - thanks for all the sibling pics. Some of those I don't think I've seen before.
Q - love the forts. That is just the best! More great memories! Yeah, baby, you're doing this mommy thing right. And about the shirt, man I don't even remember that thing, so we must not have fought about it much.
U - I don't think I kissed the tv, but maybe I thought about it... do you remember our house in Herborn where we posted pictures from teen magazines on the walls?

Overall, thanks for the tag, though. It's these quick things that let us record the fun little details.

Becky- I came across photos of both of our rooms in Herborn with the Teen Beat posters. I'm totally gonna do a post about them.

Jenn- The Gummi (pronounced Goo-mee like a good German) Basement was this place in Heidelberg, Germany near the American Housing. It was the basement of some German's house (can't even remember if it was a man or a woman) and they had several big metal shelves (like the ones in your garage) stacked high with dozens and dozens of gummi candies. We would go there after school all the time. I think they even took American money so we didn't have to worry about having Deutch Marks.

Ok sooo on to the whole Hberg reunion thing - Hi Sue!!

I think you're on to something with the Jared Spitaro thing, but I don't remember what except that he looks seriously familiar and everyone had a crush on Sam.

And ohh so sad about the Gummi Basement. All kids need one of those.

After all these years I was starting to think the Gummi Basement might have been a figment of my imagination LOL. Seriously what were we thinking?!
