Mystery Boy is here!

Our little boy still has no name, but he arrived last night, December 28th, at 9:09pm. He was 9 days early. He weighed 7 pounds 1 ounce and measured 21.5 inches long, although we're a little skeptical about the length and are going to have him remeasured.

Upon first inspection, Dan and I both thought he looked a lot like his cousin Alexander (Don and Lora's son born in April). He has great big cheeks and is an excellent latcher. The final stage of labor went super fast, going from 6cm dilated to "I have to push right now" in less than 30 minutes. Unfortunately, the epidural didn't kick in until after he was born, so I now know how excruciating natural childbirth is. But the fabulous news is I have NO BAD HEMORRHOIDS! Hallelujah! I will do another post with the play-by-play of the labor, pics and video of the girls meeting their brother and other fun stuff in the next day or so.

A name is still eluding us. It seems much harder to pick a boy's name for some reason. How will it sound for his professional future? Will it make him subject to mockery as he gets older? Does it have any personal significance to us or should we just pick a name we like the sound of? Here are some of the contenders for a first name:

  • Luke
  • Oliver
  • Nathaniel
  • Mack or Max
  • Ian
  • Miles
  • Jonah
  • Eli
  • Samuel
  • Graham
  • Jake
  • Henry (Hank)
  • and Dan's personal favorite, Filson, which if you're not familiar with fine outdoor clothing, go here and check out the object of his affection.

What does he look like to you?

I vote for Nathaniel. Lots of good nicknames with that one. I have a Nathaniel for a brother, it has served him well. He goes by Nate, Nater, Nater Pa-tater, and that is only on his law degree...
Ian is good, Luke is good (but I like to pretend I own that one, LOL). I also love Mack, but think Mack Peck is a bit much, so won't ever use it. But I don't know what if he wants to be a Supreme Court Justice, is Mack a solid enough name??? LOL.
He is beautiful. You guys are amazing. Congratulations!

I completely agree with Lisa. Nathaniel is my vote. Congratulations, Susan!! (And you made it in the tax year...good for you!).

He is a beauty! What a doll. Five kids later and I still want to snuggle him. Congrats! I have learned that they grow into whatever name you choose for them. My personal favorites (other than Jake of course) are Oliver and Miles, but they are all solid names. Way to go Sue & Dan!

Congratulations to all! Didn't anyone ever tell you that the only word you need to know during labor and delivery is "EPIDURAL?" My first one didn't work either....luckily the second one did.

I'm partial to Samuel because that's our son's name. His middle name is Hunter, named after the infamous "Hunter" dog, MacKenzie. You remember her, don't you? Ah, memories of life in Herborn-Seelbach....

I'm also partial to Max or Maxwell. I always said that if there was another baby boy in our future, either his first or middle name would be Maxwell, but we would call him Max.

Whatever you choose, just make sure it flows....that it's a name that is fitting for both a child and adult....and that when you say the name it is like a beautiful song. You'll know when it's right!

Our best to all of you from the Burke house in Verona, Wisconsin to you and yours. Say hi to your folks and Becky from us.

Congratulations! He is darling! Glad you are both doing well... :)

As for names, I speak from experience as the mother of FOUR BOYS! (...Still wrapping my mind around that!) Just remember that it will get shortened to one syllable, no matter what you do, so pick something you like the short version of too. My personal favorites from your list are: Ian and Jonah because I like how they sound with your girl's names.

And for the record, (for whatever it's worth!) I absolutely FORBID you from using either Jake or Hank... It is just NOT right to name your SON after your deceased DOGS... no matter how beloved they were! ;)

And seriously, Dan... FILSON? Come on! He is going to have to live through Elementary School!

But that said, I am sure you will choose well. And I am absolutely sure that we will all LOVE him, no matter what we end up calling him!

I am so glad Mystery Boy is here safe & sound! Just the day before Tyler and in time to score for this year's taxes!!

My name preference = Samuel after his great-great Granddad Sam Cox.

So let's test it out:
Can Sam come out to play?
Samuel ___ Richardson, PhD.
Sam Richardson just kicked the winning field goal

Yeah, I think that works!!

Love to you all!!

I love him! He is so cute and he is three weeks younger than Audrey!
I'm sure when we were youngin's we had all our kids' names picked out. Why is it so hard now???? =)

I like Max and Eli. I put them together with Lily and Amelia. As in "Love, the Richardsons
Dan, Sue, Lily, Amelia, and Max."

Or "Love, the Richardsons
Dan, Sue, Lily, Amelia, and Eli."

Those are my votes. I won't be surprised if you choose one of those since I like them!!

PS last night I was thinking of names for the new boy and I was like they should totally name him Richard after Col. Garlitz then the kids name will be Rich Richardson!!!

Good luck and congratulations to such a handsome young man. I really mean that too. Not too many babies are cute at birth but he really is!!!

You can't have Samuel. That's MY pick for the next one.

I like the one syllable options...
Luke, Jake, Max, Hank...Hank is kind of pushing it :)

Don't worry about how official he will sound as a doctor or judge. Can you imagine naming your son Clarence and having him sit on the Supreme Court? Yet there he sits :)

I was thinking Luke and Alexander were strongly Stewart is resemblance, but maybe I contributed more than I thought :) Good looking boy you have there!

On second thought, remember that you need something really good to call him when you're mad-

If you pick a one syllable job, you have to use a longer middle name.

"Max Alexander Richardson! You get your butt over here RIGHT NOW!"

Wow! What a cutie! I want to pinch (gently) those cheeks. He looks so yummy! As for my vote on the names, I like Ian, isn't that Scottish? I also like Luke, but Lily says that she has a cousin named Luke. Yeah, I was so mad when Mike's brother & his wife named their little girl Jessalynn. Of course they call her Jess or Jessie. I had just convinced Jesse that it was originally a boy's name from the Bible, and then they named their little girl that. Anyway, must let it go, she's almost 12 now. I like Nathaniel, but there are a lot of Nates and Nathans our there. We tried to choose classic names but not popular names. We kindof blew it with Caleb, there's a lot of Calebs out there. Anyway, looks like everyone has something to say about the name, in the end you just need to choose. I agree with one comment, no deceased dog names or Filson???You want the kid to be teased mercilessly?? I don't think so. Can't wait to see him, but I am battling a terrible cold so I better stay away. I am going to make him a woobie right away! Congrats!!

Congrats to all of you. Glad little boy Richardson arrived safe and sound and just in time....you'll have one more tax decuction for 2008.

I love Samuel and Jonah for his name(wonder why), also Nathaniel and Oliver. Give him a name he will have to live up to, that's one of my friends advice.

He's gorgeous!

Congrats on your bouncy baby boy! I like Nathaniel or Jake. But you have to live with the name. Make sure you yell it once, at no one in particular, before you decide. It helps if it sounds right when you dole out punishment.

Yeah!! I'm an Aunt again! Thanks guys. I appreciate you doing all the work and all I have to do is just enjoy him when you come see us....so perfect!
I won't weigh in on the name conundrum (yes, I spell checked that). I just wanted to tell you I am happy you both are safe and healthy. Ok, on second thought, how about you leave it Mysery and shorten it to Myst? See why I didn't give my opinion? LOL
Love to you all!!

Should have spell checked Mystery however!! LOL

Oliver.. I think Oliver is cute with Lilly and Amelia! He's a beaut! Nice baby makin' you guys!

Sue, you are so hilarious! Your baby is a doll. I personally like the names Jake or Jonah. If you name him Nathaniel, he will probably be called Nate for short (a name I absolutely love, of course), but it might get confusing with all the Nates you hang out with:)

Congrats guys! He is beautiful! Good luck with picking his name, we have a hard time agreeing on names and we're not even pregnant yet! Looking forward to the grand announcement! Hope 2009 is a fantastic year for you all!
